Although statistics reveal that older men think about and engage in sex more frequently than their female counterparts, a new study from Michigan State University found that men over 57 who have sex once a week or more (and achieve climax) are at nearly double the risk for cardiovascular problems than their inactive male peers.
In contrast, women of the same age who have sex regularly can expect health benefits including lower blood pressure. The National Social Life, Health and Aging Project is the first large scale study of the impact of sex on the heart health of seniors. The study collected data from more than 2,000 adults between the ages of 57 and 85.
Why do men risk their health by keeping busy in the bedroom later in life? According to Hui Liu, associate professor of sociology, older men have more difficulty reaching orgasm and as a result may exert themselves, causing stress on their cardiovascular system, in order to reach climax.
Previous studies have found regular sexual activity in older men not to be a risk factor in heart health but rather a benefit in helping to develop and maintain close relationships that in turn reduce stress and promote well being.
