Summer Siesta Beneficial for Seniors

Nothing says summer like an afternoon siesta under the shade of tree and during the dog days and taking it easy during the hottest time of day makes sense, especially for older adults.  The best times of day to be active outdoors in the summer are early morning and evening.  When the sun is at it’s strongest, a good book, a cool drink and a short nap are about as good as it gets for most adults.

Science is backing what generations have known to be true.  A short nap, no more than 20-30 minutes, can improve alertness, increase the brain’s ability to make critical decisions and allow for better attention to detail.  Longer than 30 minutes can leave you groggy and interfere with a good night’s sleep.

According to the Mayo Clinic, the optimum time to nap is between 2 and 3 p.m. and adults who enjoy a mid-day shut eye can expect to feel more relaxed, improve their memory and mood, react more quickly and feel less fatigue.   However, if daytime naps create problems sleeping at night or leave you feeling disoriented,  try cutting rests to 10 minutes.

The natural rhythm of a summer day, to rise early with the sun and indulge in an afternoon riposo (Italian for rest), works well for many seniors.   Avoiding the sweltering heat of mid-day,  an afternoon rest allows older adult to recharge their battery and regain the energy to participate in activities later in the day.   To create the optimal environment for sleep, choose a quiet, cool, space and in the heat make sure to hydrate well throughout the day.

This weekend, take time to nap, guilt free!
