Winter is arriving with a roar for many this year and skiers of all ages are gearing up to hit the slopes this holiday season. Many older adults, who introduced their children to downhill skiing and snowboarding are still actively carving the mountainside well into their 50’s, 60’s and beyond (if their knees are still up to the abuse). Nearly 1.25 million skiers in the United States are over 55 and although that number decreases with advancing age, there are many senior benefits to encourage older skiers.
According to seniorsskiing.com, there are 108 US Resorts where seniors can ski free, depending on their age. Skiers over 70, for example, can ski Utah’s Alta Ski area, Washington’s Mount Baker and Holiday Mountain in New York free or for a nominal processing fee. Spout Springs Ski Area in Oregon offers free skiing to older adults 64 and up. Many ski areas also offer discount lift ticket, rentals and lessons for seniors. It’s best to check online to verify any rate reductions before planning a trip. To find a ski buddy or learn more about organized trips, visit the National Ski Council Federation Ski Club Locator here .
