Research Backs Laughter As Best Medicine Share on XThe saying goes that “laughter is the best medicine” and now scientific research may back up that claim.
Laughter and humour therapy have been shown to decrease levels of the stress hormone cortisol which may harm memory and the ability to learn in the elderly.
A recent study, conducted at Loma Linda University and led by Gurinder Singh Bains, compared two groups of seniors. One group of seniors watched a funny 20 minute video while the other did not. Their cortisol levels were recorded before and after viewing and they were each given a memory test.
Researchers found that cortisol levels dropped in the group that watched the video, most significantly in those with diabetes. This group also showed an improvement in memory assessment.
According to the research, less stress equals better memory as well as an increase in blood flow and improvement in mood. Laughing or enjoying humor can also increase the release of endorphins and dopamine in the brain which create a sense of pleasure.
