The Canadian Heart & Stroke Foundation list three signs of a cardiac arrest:
- Sudden collapse
- Sudden unresponsiveness to touch or sound
- Abnormal or no breathing
Cardiac arrest is a medical emergency affecting all ages regardless of fitness level. Act quickly! If you are with or near someone who exhibits any of the above symptoms:
- Call 9-1-1
- Get an AED (automated external defibrillator) or have one brought to you. Many public places now provide AED’s. Turn it on and follow the prompts.
- Start CPR – push hard and fast in the centre of the chest. Keep doing this until the person begins to breath or move or medical personnel arrive.
