Mobility is important for older people in order to maintain their independence and social connections while aging at home. Often distances to and from or around shopping malls, parks and other neighbourhoood areas become too great for seniors to manage on foot. Mobility scooters can provide accessibility and independence despite physical restrictions.
Mobility scooters are not always best for all seniors; they are best suited to older adults who have enough strength in both hands and manual dexterity to safely steer and operate the controls. They are designed to be faster and more rugged than a traditional wheelchair. If a driver is impaired either mentally or in visual capability, it may not be the right choice. The operator must also be able to sit and balance for long periods of time.
Visit your doctor for a diagnosis requiring an assistive device; they will refer you to a vendor. In Ontario, the Assistive Devices Program may pay for up to 75 per cent of the equipment if the patient meets eligibility requirements such as having a physical disability for six months or longer, holding a valid Ontario Health card and not requiring the device exclusively for sports, work or school. Only a registered vendor will qualify for a shared cost through the Assistive Devices Program. Visit www.health.gov.on.ca for a list of vendors in Ontario. Each province will have its own program through the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.
Scooters are not appropriate for all seniors and there are several factors to consider when selecting an assistive device.
- How will the scooter be used – indoor our outdoors? This will determine what model you choose; 3 wheeled and lightweight for indoors or a more robust outdoor model.
- If you plan to transport a scooter – make sure you have a vehicle that can accommodate it.
- What can you afford? There is a wide range of scooters ranging in price from $1,000 to $6,000.
- Take it for a test drive – is it comfortable? Will it support the user’s weight?
- Ask about warranties and safety features which are included in the purchase (what are the extras?)
- Ask about the charging process – how long does a charge last?
- Make sure the scooter will fit through household doors and be able to maneuver through the home if that is it’s intended use.
