It’s nearing time to deck the halls for the holiday season and with seniors who face mobility or balance problems, this is a task that has the potential to become hazardous. Reaching and climbing on ladders to hang lights and decorations or struggling to pull the tree out of storage can spell disaster for older adults. Ancient tree lights and combustible holiday decor are just a few of the potential dangers seasonal tree trimming may pose.
Family and friends can help older adults stay safer this December by offering time to help set up holiday decor and ensure the home is free from possible dangers.
If a older family member uses a walker or cane, make sure cords, trees and any decorations won’t present difficulty navigating around the home. Caregivers, friends and family can do a quick check to remove any fall risks such as decorative throw rugs or floor arrangements when visiting.
Although most older adults enjoy decorating for the holidays, for those with dementia, too much stimulation or clutter can be stressful. In many situations, fewer decorations may be safer and more enjoyable and items can be rotated each year to be enjoyed. Avoid decorations that resemble food, these can be confusing for seniors with Alzheimer’s or other dementias.
Tips to stay safe this Christmas:
- Real trees can dry out quickly creating a fire hazard; consider an artificial tree
- Have family help set up the tree to avoid falls; make sure tree is stable and not likely to tip over
- Check lights for any bare wires and replace old lights with good quality, energy efficient lights
- Keep any candles or open flames away from holiday decor – there are many good LED candles that are a safer choice
- Before lighting a fire, have the flue professionally cleaned and never leave a fire, stove or candles unattended
- Check smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are working and keep a new fire extinguisher on hand
- Older adults may also need help getting infrequently-used dishes or cookware out of storage
With a little advanced planning and perhaps scaling back a bit on the clutter, the holidays can be a safe and wonderful time for traditions both new and old.
